Church separation takes center stage in Liberia
An executive meeting of the Liberia Annual Conference was held for advocacy groups with differing views on The United Methodist Church’s future to discuss what the conference would do after the 2024 General Conference. Liberian Conference Bishop Samuel Quire said he “will remain a United Methodist until otherwise ordered.”

Amidst UMC’s Affirmation Of Homosexuality: United Methodist Africa Forum Denounces Gay Rights
The UMC in Africa has refused to break away from the UMC, as it was predicted that they would have formed the Global Methodist Church; instead, affirmed and approved the name United Methodist Africa Forum (UMAF) as an association of United Methodists that aims to promote, support and foster unity in the United Methodist Church in Africa, encouraging the Africa Central Conferences to revive the spirit of evangelism.

The United Methodist Africa Forum (UMAF) gathered in Johannesburg from 21 to 22 April 2023, and resolved to support the unity of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Africa. The UMAF recognized and supported the statement of the September 2022 African Bishops against the separation of the UMC.

African bishops call for unity, condemn advocacy groups
African bishops called for unity in The United Methodist Church while condemning traditionalist advocacy groups looking to break up the denomination. The bishops released a statement Sept. 8 denouncing the Africa Initiative and Wesleyan Covenant Association, which they say "are wrongly influencing God's people in our areas." The statement was released at the close of the Africa Colleges of Bishops retreat.
